THE FUTURE OF TEACHING IS ALREADY IN SESSION.

Most entrepreneurs start with a business plan. Nicole Birnbaum ’22 started with a question: What if a simple silicone ring could become a way for people to express themselves? That curiosity during her first year at the College of Charleston led to FlipRings, a creative venture that turned a small idea into a nationally recognized business.

Inspired by her father’s workout ring, Birnbaum envisioned a more colorful, expressive alternative. Combining her passion for graphic design with her entrepreneurial drive, she developed reversible silicone rings featuring words and designs to match any mood.

At the School of Business, entrepreneurship courses and faculty mentorship helped Birnbaum shape the idea, test its potential and take her first steps as a business owner. In Introduction to Entrepreneurship, she connected with Professor David Wyman, who encouraged her to compete for the College’s Student Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Despite her nerves about public speaking, she took the opportunity and won the 2021–22 award and $1,000 prize.

Birnbaum’s story shows what becomes possible when talented students have access to exceptional mentors, experiential programs and environments designed for collaboration. The comprehensive campaign will extend those opportunities to more students and equip them to create, lead and thrive in a changing world.
