SCIENCE IN ACTION

The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences (SNES) puts science to work. Leveraging Charleston’s coastal location and specialized harbor research facilities, our students and faculty turn the Lowcountry into an active laboratory, tackling urgent environmental, economic and health challenges head-on.

Across biology, chemistry, environmental geosciences and physics, College of Charleston faculty lead applied, student-centered research that directly strengthens the community:

Protecting local fisheries by restoring marine habitats, monitoring coastal resilience and safeguarding South Carolina’s vital fishing economy.

Preserving our environment by tracking water quality, managing natural resources and solving complex ecological problems across the Lowcountry.

Advancing health innovation by partnering with regional healthcare centers, including nearby MUSC, to expand clinical internships and biomedical research pathways.

FEATURED STATS

  • The college offers the only meteorology degree in South Carolina
  • Stono preserve’s 1000 acres serves as a living laboratory for students
  • The NASA South Carolina Space Grant Consortium is headquartered at the college
  • Over 1400 pre-health students make up one of the largest communities at the college
